It coincides with William Shakespeare’s birthday and World Book and
Copyright Day. English Language Day aims to entertain and inform people about
the history, culture and achievements associated with the language. The day often
features book-reading events, English quizzes, poetry and literature exchanges,
and other activities that promote the English language. English is one of the
two working languages of the UN Secretariat and one of the organization’s six
official languages. English is often referred to as a "world
language", or the lingua franca (bridge language or common
language used by speakers of different languages) of the modern era because it
is widely spoken. The UN first celebrated English Language Day on April 23,
2010. For a language that was used by only 3 tribes about 1500 years ago,
English has official or special status in at least 75 countries with a total
population of over two billion. It has three-times more non-native speakers
than native speakers. No other language comes close to matching that, and it is
that that makes English global. It is the modern lingua franca, the language
used by the Russians to talk to the Nigerians, the Germans to talk to the
Spanish, the Chinese to talk to the Brazilians…
What activities can you offer to celebrate English Language Day?

ОтветитьУдалитьIn my opinion all the people from different countries will be interested in learn something new about the history of English language. Because lots of people and even native speakers use this language and don't know it's history. Maybe it would be great when some people will walk through the streets and tell different stories and legends about the English language history. Also people can spend some quizzes after which responders could achieve little prizes: sweets or trinkets for example. And in my view it would be fantastic if some festivals dedicated to the English day will be spend. Such event can attract a huge number of spectators of all ages. Children will be interested in different arcanas and funny legends, and adults will be interested in discussions of english history. Of course it would be great to make a spectacular fireworks show in the end. People will remember such day still long time and maybe even foreigners would be trying to visit this excellent celebration.
ОтветитьУдалитьTo my mind the main activities were mentioned in the text, but there are some events that can be added. For example, the game "What?Where? When?" can be interesting for children and for adults as well. And one of the rules can be to use as many English proverbs as you can. Also people can organize performances and shows to the traditional English literature. The most amasing event can be a fancy-dress ball and "The-Best-William-Shakespeare-costume-competition". Frankly speaking, April 23 is a holiday for entertainment and also a profitable day when you can get useful knowledge. So, if this holiday is full of great activities and unforgettable impressions, it will be wide spread traditional national holiday and it will be rightly.
