Easter is a
religious holiday, but some of its customs, such as Easter eggs, are likely
linked to pagan traditions. The egg, an ancient symbol of new life, has been
associated with pagan festivals celebrating spring. From a Christian
perspective, Easter eggs are said to represent Jesus’ emergence from the tomb
and resurrection. Decorating eggs for Easter is a tradition that dates back to
at least the 13th century, according to some sources. One explanation for this
custom is that eggs were formerly a forbidden food during the Lenten season, so
people would paint and decorate them to mark the end of the period of penance
and fasting, then eat them on Easter as a celebration.

Easter egg ever made was over 25 feet high and weighed over 8,000 pounds. It
was built out of chocolate and marshmallow and supported by an internal steel
frame.

celebrate Easter?
Аlthough my family don't observe the Lent, we celebrate Easter. I usually decorate eggs with my mum and sister; some years ago we baked easter cakes, but now just buy them.
ОтветитьУдалитьOnce we have been in Austria on the Easter day. And we were surprisingly shocked when we were congratulated on this holiday in the hotel, and on the breakfast waiters brought us Easter eggs.

ОтветитьУдалитьMany believing people observe Lent before Easter. My family and I hadn’t done it before, but this year we decided to try. Also, to be prepared for Easter, we make colorful eggs and bake Easter cakes. I think it is better to prepare such dishes, dishes for holidays, is much more interesting, than to buy ready ones in a shop. The preparation for this great holiday creates special festive mood therefore when the holiday comes, it seems more cheerful and more significant. After cooking of cakes, painting of eggs, many people go to church to consecrate it with holy water. The priest sprinkles these dishes, and also people with water, and people endow money and part of the brought food to church. Easter unites believing people: all congratulate each other, treat relatives and friends, all rejoice to this great holiday. Therefore Easter is one of my favorite holidays.
